Saskatchewan Increases Court Capacity with New Associate Judges at the Court of King's Bench

CANADA, October 2 - Released on October 1, 2026

Today, The King's Bench Amendment Act, 2026, came into force, establishing associate judges within the Court of King's Bench and increasing the Court's capacity to address civil and family matters.

"We are very pleased to welcome Saskatchewan's first associate judges," the Honourable Chief Justice M.D. Popescul said. "This is an important step in the ongoing modernization of our courts and will help support access to justice and the timely resolution of matters in a busy and increasingly complex court system."

The legislation provides for the appointment of associate judges by the Government of Saskatchewan, based on recommendations made by the Chief Justice of the Court of King's Bench.

"The appointment of Saskatchewan's first associate judges marks an important milestone for our justice system," Justice Minister and Attorney General Tim McLeod, K.C. said. "These experienced legal professionals will help increase the Court of King's Bench's capacity to manage civil and family matters, allowing the court to respond more effectively to growing demands while supporting timely access to justice for Saskatchewan residents."

An initial roster of five associate judges has been appointed, effective October 1, 2026.

The appointed associate judges are:

  • Louis Browne, K.C., Regina.
  • Darcia Connelly, Regina.
  • Rani Grewall, Regina.
  • Cynthia Yelland, Saskatoon.

As well, the Registrar in Bankruptcy, Alexander Shalashniy, Regina, is also appointed an associate judge to provide appropriate judicial independence and authority for that role.

Associate judges are experienced members of the legal community. All appointees have been members in good standing of a Canadian bar for at least 10 years preceding their appointment.

The Act also establishes a compensation commission and complaint review council, which will follow similar rules and procedures as those that already exist in Saskatchewan courts.

The implementation of a supportive tier of associate judges in the Saskatchewan Court of King's Bench is a significant step in modernizing the Court in Saskatchewan and brings the province into alignment with how similar courts are structured in other Canadian provinces.
