Trump Moves to Federalize D.C. Police

(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump has initiated a federal takeover of Washington, D.C.’s police force, a decision largely driven by the assault of a former DOGE employee and his personal concerns about growing homelessness in the capital, according to various media outlets.

On August 5, Trump threatened to impose federal control after an incident involving 19-year-old Edward Coristine, a former worker at DOGE. Coristine and another individual were attacked during an attempted carjacking on August 3, as outlined in a DC Police Department report accessed by CNN.

“Somebody from DOGE was very badly hurt last night. You saw that. A young man who was beaten up by a bunch of thugs in D.C.,” Trump was quoted by CNN.

He continued by warning local authorities: “And either they're going to straighten their act out in terms of government and terms of protection, or we're going to have to federalize and run it the way it's supposed to be run,” he told members of the press.

In addition to the violent incident involving Coristine, Trump's decision to take control of the police force was influenced by his personal observations of deteriorating street conditions.

A White House representative noted that Trump shared pictures of homeless camps and scattered roadside trash on the social platform Truth Social over the weekend.

“This dire public safety crisis stems directly from the abject failures of the city’s local leadership,” Trump stated at a press briefing where he confirmed the federalization. “We’re going to do it right. We’re going to get it done quickly.”

However, the move has faced swift backlash. Brian Schwalb, Washington, D.C.’s independently elected attorney general, denounced the takeover, describing it as "unprecedented, unnecessary, and unlawful."
